About
Spatial Light Construct
Created for the Aesthetica Magazine Art Prize, Spatial Light Construct is a masterclass in architectonic spatial light art and design. This site-specific corner installation fuses structural precision with sculptural grace, offering an experience that is both visually compelling and conceptually rich. Through asymmetry, material contrast, and the nuanced articulation of space, light, and form, crafted with a deep commitment to aesthetic integrity the work invites critical engagement with the built environment, balancing moments of stillness, tension, and spatial complexity.
Conceived, engineered, and fabricated entirely in-house by multidisciplinary artist-designer James Winter RCA, founding partner and director of SHIFT, the piece reflects a broader studio practice grounded in innovation, formal experimentation, and material refinement. Constructed using traditional maquettes and analogue modelling techniques, eschewing digital fabrication. The work was designed specifically for a Grade I-listed 15th-century church in York, reaching final dimensions of approximately 17 feet high by 13 feet wide.
From October 2025, Winter will transition from his full-time role at SHIFT to serve as Senior Art Director in a consultancy capacity, focusing on the development of Winter and Winter, his independent creative studio dedicated to the design and production of large-format light, space, and form constructs at the intersection of site-specific art, architecture, and high-concept spatial installation.
